The Works of Thomas Goodwin, D.D.

By Thomas Goodwin, D.D, sometime president at Magdalene College, Oxford.

About the Author Thomas Goodwin:

Thomas Goodwin was born in 1600 in Norfolk, England. He studied at Cambridge University and became a fellow of Catherine Hall. In 1625, he was ordained as a minister in the Church of England and began preaching in several parishes in London.

Goodwin was known for his powerful preaching and his non-conformist views. He became a leading figure in the Puritan movement and was involved in several controversies with the Church of England authorities. In 1634, he was suspended from his ministry for refusing to read the Book of Sports, which mandated certain recreational activities on Sundays.

During the English Civil War, Goodwin supported the parliamentary forces and served as a chaplain to Oliver Cromwell’s army. He was also involved in the negotiations that led to the execution of King Charles I in 1649.

After the Restoration of the monarchy in 1660, Goodwin’s non-conformist views brought him into conflict with the authorities once again. He was ejected from his position as a minister in 1662 under the Act of Uniformity, which required all ministers to conform to the practices of the Church of England.

Despite his ejection, Goodwin continued to preach and minister to his congregation in secret. He also wrote extensively on theology and published several influential works, including “The Heart of Christ in Heaven Towards Sinners on Earth” and “The Work of the Holy Spirit in Our Salvation.”

Goodwin died in 1680 and was buried in Bunhill Fields Cemetery in London. His writings continued to be widely read and influential among the non-conformist community in England and America.
