About the Author:
Augustus Toplady’s parents were Richard Toplady and Catherine Bate. Richard Toplady was a major in the British army and was stationed in Ireland when Augustus was born. Catherine Bate was the daughter of a wealthy family in Ireland.
Augustus was their only child and was born in Farnham, Surrey, England on November 4, 1740. His parents were Anglicans and raised him in a religious household. Richard Toplady died when Augustus was young, leaving Catherine to raise him on her own.
Catherine was a devout Christian and played a significant role in her son’s spiritual development. She encouraged him to read the Bible and other religious texts, and instilled in him a strong sense of faith.
After Augustus was ordained as an Anglican minister, he took his mother with him to London, where she lived with him until her death in 1773.
Augustus Toplady was deeply grateful to his mother for her influence on his life and frequently expressed his appreciation for her in his writing.
Not Married
Augustus Toplady was not married. He remained single throughout his life, devoting himself fully to his ministry and writing. Toplady was known for his strong Christian faith and his passionate preaching, and he often traveled to different parts of England to share the Gospel with others.
Although he never married, Toplady had a close circle of friends and fellow ministers who supported him in his work. He was also known for his kindness and generosity, and was highly respected within the Christian community.
After his death in 1778, Toplady was remembered as a gifted preacher and theologian, as well as a prolific writer of hymns and other religious works.
