By Philip Schaff

The Apostolic Fathers with Justin Martyr and Irenaeus.

By Philip Schaff.

About Philip Schaff:

Philip Schaff (1819-1893) was a prominent theologian and church historian who lived in the 19th century. He was born in Switzerland and later moved to the United States, where he taught at several universities and seminaries.

One of Schaff’s most significant contributions was his translation and editing of the Ante-Nicene Fathers series, which included “The Apostolic Fathers with Justin Martyr and Irenaeus.” This series was first published in the 1880s and included English translations of many important early Christian writings, along with helpful introductions and annotations by Schaff and other scholars.

Schaff’s work on the Ante-Nicene Fathers series helped to make these early Christian texts more accessible to a wider audience and helped to spur renewed interest in the study of early Christianity. His contributions to the study of church history and theology continue to be recognized and valued by scholars and theologians today.

The Apostolic Fathers:

“The Apostolic Fathers with Justin Martyr and Irenaeus” is a collection of early Christian writings that date back to the first and second centuries. The term “Apostolic Fathers” refers to a group of early Christian leaders who were believed to have been disciples of the apostles themselves or who were closely associated with them. This collection includes writings such as the First and Second Epistle of Clement, the Epistle of Barnabas, the Epistles of Ignatius, the Shepherd of Hermas, the Didache, and the fragments of Papias.

In addition to these writings, the collection also includes works by two prominent Christian apologists of the second century, Justin Martyr and Irenaeus. Justin Martyr’s “First and Second Apologies” are included, which are his defense of Christianity against its critics and an attempt to persuade Roman authorities to tolerate the religion. Irenaeus’ “Against Heresies” is also included, which was a polemic against various early Christian heresies.

Overall, the collection is important because it provides insight into the beliefs, practices, and struggles of the early Christian church. It also sheds light on the development of Christian doctrine and the challenges that early Christians faced as they tried to spread their faith in a hostile environment.

More about Justin Martyr and Irenaeus:

Justin Martyr and Irenaeus were both early Christian apologists and writers who lived in the second century AD.

Justin Martyr was born in Palestine in the early second century AD and converted to Christianity as an adult. He became one of the most important early Christian apologists, writing extensively on the compatibility of Christianity with classical philosophy and refuting criticisms of the faith. He was also known for his dialogues with pagan philosophers, in which he sought to show the superiority of Christianity over other philosophical systems. Some of his most famous works include “First Apology” and “Second Apology,” which were written to defend Christianity against charges of immorality and disloyalty to the Roman Empire.

Irenaeus was born in Asia Minor in the late second century AD and was also an important Christian apologist. He was a disciple of Polycarp, who was himself a disciple of the Apostle John. Irenaeus is best known for his work “Against Heresies,” which was a response to various Gnostic heresies that were spreading in the early Christian church. In the book, he argues for the importance of orthodox Christian doctrine and refutes the Gnostic belief in secret knowledge and the separation of the spiritual and material worlds.

Both Justin Martyr and Irenaeus were important figures in the early Christian church, and their writings have had a significant impact on Christian theology and apologetics.
