About the Author Philip Henry:

Philip Henry was a well-known Welsh minister and nonconformist who lived from 1631 to 1696. He is perhaps best known as the father of the famous Bible commentator Matthew Henry.

Philip Henry was born into a family of means in North Wales, and he was educated at Oxford University. However, he turned down a career in law and instead became a minister, serving several churches in the Welsh countryside before settling in Worthenbury, Shropshire.

Henry was a staunch Presbyterian and a committed nonconformist who refused to conform to the rules and practices of the Church of England. As a result, he suffered persecution and harassment throughout his career. Nevertheless, he continued to preach and to write, producing a number of well-regarded works on theology and devotion.

Perhaps Philip Henry’s most enduring legacy, however, is his influence on his son Matthew. Philip Henry was a devoted father who took an active interest in his son’s education and spiritual development. He taught Matthew Latin and Greek, and he instilled in him a deep love for the Bible and a commitment to ministry. Matthew Henry would go on to become one of the most influential Bible commentators of all time, and his works continue to be widely read and studied to this day.
