By Augustus Toplady.
About the Author:
Augustus Montague Toplady (1740-1778) was an Anglican hymn writer and theologian. He is best known for writing the hymn “Rock of Ages,” which is still sung in many churches today.
Toplady was born in Surrey, England and grew up in a religious household. He attended Trinity College, Dublin and was ordained as an Anglican minister in 1762. He served as a minister in several churches throughout his career.
In addition to his hymn writing, Toplady was also a theologian and writer. He wrote several books and articles on theology and church history, and was a strong defender of Calvinist theology. His most famous work, “The Historic Proof of the Doctrinal Calvinism of the Church of England,” argued that the Church of England was fundamentally Calvinist in its theology.
Toplady died at the age of 38 from tuberculosis, but his hymns and writings continue to be influential in the Christian church today.
