Clearly Proved and Singularly Improved

Or A Practical Catechism

By Hugh Binning

About Hugh Binning:

Reverend Hugh Binning (1627–1653) was a Scottish Presbyterian theologian and minister. He was born in Dalvennan, Ayrshire, Scotland. Binning was recognized for his intellectual prowess at a young age, and he went on to study at the University of Glasgow. He became one of the Regents at the University of Glasgow, a position that involved teaching and academic responsibilities.

Despite his academic success, Binning was drawn to the ministry, and he eventually became the minister of Govan. He is remembered for his eloquent preaching and his commitment to the Reformed Presbyterian tradition. Binning played a significant role in the development of Reformed theology in Scotland during the 17th century.

Reverend Hugh Binning’s writings often focused on topics such as the nature of God’s love, the importance of humility, and the pursuit of holiness. His works were well-regarded for their depth of thought and spiritual insight. Unfortunately, Binning’s life was cut short at the age of 26 when he succumbed to tuberculosis in 1653. Despite his relatively short life, his impact on Scottish theology and Presbyterianism was enduring.

Compilation by Reverend M. Leishman:

The collection of his works, edited by Reverend M. Leishman, is likely a compilation of Binning’s sermons, lectures, and writings. Reverend M. Leishman, who edited the collection, was the Minister of the Parish of Govan, where Hugh Binning had served. The purpose of such collections is to preserve and share the theological insights and teachings of notable figures from the past.
