About Stephen Charnock:
Stephen Charnock, an English Puritan Presbyterian clergyman, was born in the St Katherine Cree parish of London in 1628 and passed away on July 27, 1680.
He studied at Emmanuel College, Cambridge, where he was converted to the Christian faith, and began his spiritual journey as a Puritan divine.
After leaving the college, he worked as a private teacher or tutor before becoming a minister in Southwark, where he converted individuals to Christianity. He then went on to earn a fellowship and a position as senior proctor at New College, Oxford.
In 1656, Charnock moved to Ireland, where he became a chaplain to Henry Cromwell, governor of Ireland. He began a regular ministry of preaching to believers in Dublin, where he gained fame for his skill as a preacher. When the monarchy was restored in England in 1660, Charnock was legally prevented from practicing public ministry in Ireland and returned to England, where he continued to study and minister in non-public ways.
In 1675, Charnock began a co-pastorship at Crosby Hall in London, which was his last official place of ministry before his death in 1680. Nearly all of his writings were transcribed after his death, including his famous Discourses upon the Existence and Attributes of God. These lectures were delivered to the members of his congregation at Crosby Hall and are preserved today as The Existence and Attributes of God, which was first published posthumously in 1682.
