About the Author Joseph Charles Philpot:

Joseph Charles Philpot (1802-1869) was an English preacher and writer who played an important role in the development of the Strict Baptist movement in the 19th century.

Philpot was born in Ripple, Kent, England, and was educated at Oxford University. He became a minister in the Church of England in 1825 but later became dissatisfied with its teachings and joined the Strict Baptists in 1835. He soon became a prominent preacher in this movement and was widely regarded as one of its leading figures.

Philpot’s preaching and writing were characterized by a deep piety and a strong emphasis on the doctrines of grace, particularly the sovereignty of God in salvation. He was a prolific writer, and his works were widely read and highly regarded among the Strict Baptists and other Reformed Christians of his time. Some of his most famous works include “The Soul’s Delectation in God,” “The Gospel Mystery of Sanctification,” and “The Person and Work of Christ.”

In addition to his work as a preacher and writer, Philpot also served as the editor of “The Gospel Standard,” a Strict Baptist magazine that he helped to found in 1835. He held this position until his death in 1869.
